Diesel Public Policy Benefits: Global Warming, Energy Efficiency

In a speech given at the Executives Club of Chicago in 2004, Navistar CEO Dan Ustian advocated the increased use of diesel as ‘the fuel of the future’ — an asset useful in public policy.

Excerpts from his remarks:

  • “…Diesel engines’ greater efficiency means they emit less carbon dioxide…”

  • “…the greenhouse gas considered chiefly responsible for global warming…”

  • “…As a nation, we can reduce our use of imported oil, improve our mileage and reduce CO2 emissions…”

  • “…(G)overnment policy should encourage consumers to make greater use of advanced diesel-powered vehicles.”

Climate Change: Navistar’s Commitment to be Part of the Answer

Navistar’s policy regarding climate change affirms the critical public need to improve energy efficiency and fuel diversity and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As a company with more than a century of experience in diesel engine technology, our primary GHG emissions commitment is to enhance the potential for diesel trucks and school buses to reduce on-road CO2 emissions. We will continue our research in and development of hybrid diesel vehicles, and the use of bio-fuels and other alternatives. We will sustain and improve our global-standard emissions control program in all our manufacturing operations. In addition to our own company efforts, we will work with and support others in our supply chain, our customer channels, in organizations where we can make a meaningful contribution, and we will work in partnership with policy makers and regulators to achieve workable and effective solutions to global warming issues.
