Navistar Statement on Global Climate Change
Navistar believes that achievement of the vital public policy goals of energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions reduction will require strong collaboration of public and private sector interests, and our company expects to be proactive in that process.
Navistar’s position on carbon constraint is that public policy mandates must recognize the significant fuel-efficient, lower-carbon contribution of clean diesel technology. We believe that government at all levels should encourage greater use of diesel transportation, advanced diesel technology and emerging solutions such as diesel hybrid engines as an important part of the answer to global climate change.
Our company is committed to sustainable greenhouse gas reduction in our plants and in our products.
Navistar’s facilities continuously improve energy efficiency through enhancements in lighting, insulation, technology, equipment and operating practices. Our comprehensive emission inventory system enables us to track our greenhouse gas reduction progress. In our products — diesel engines, trucks, school buses and emission-reduction retrofits — Navistar leads by example. Our engines were the first to achieve current federal standards for diesel trucks and school buses, cutting black carbon levels to near zero. Our diesel hybrid vehicles emit 40 percent less carbon dioxide than conventional diesel engines, and our aerodynamic vehicle designs will further reduce emissions of this greenhouse gas. Our vehicles are able to use bio-diesel fuel to ease petroleum reliance.
Navistar, with other business interests and through our own customer education programs, will continue to raise awareness and encourage responsible action on diesel-related environmental matters. As a member of concerned organizations such as the Business Roundtable, Navistar will work collaboratively with public policy makers and all our stakeholders to achieve rational and sustainable solutions related to climate change.
